The Origin of Two Feet Apart

Meet Patra

Patra van Herksen is a mother (an only parent), a Black woman, and is the evolutionary woman behind Two Feet Apart - a multidimensional platform consisting of a community storytelling podcast that carries the same name, intersectionally inclusive and accessible community events and inclusive resource education for businesses and content creators. She prides herself on continuously challenging and developing her education, positively impacting the lives of others, and striving to remain ‘present’ in all her personal and professional endeavours. Patra’s wishes are for Two Feet Apart to improve the quality of life for others, through the realm of education and healthy narratives, in sustainable ways.

Through her attendance to a variety of networking events, Patra befriended a keynote speaker who was deaf. In future conversation with her new friend, Patra learned that when she would post speaking videos on her social media platforms, that it was difficult to understand what she was communicating. Upon this discovery, Patra sought out courses and literature to support her in making her social media an inclusive space for all. With experience in the realm of marketing, Patra saw an opportunity to dive in and pair her passions with her pre-existing and newly found skillsets- thus, Two Feet Apart was born.

Two Feet Apart is a space for individuals to learn that language matters- that words mean things. To embrace intersectional inclusivity means practicing inclusivity within 2SLGBTQIA+, Indigenous, POC, and Black communities. Embracing intersectional inclusivity means providing accessible practices for those who possess visible and invisible disabilities. It is a space to place egos in the crevices of our being, in hopes of broadening mental horizons to foster growth. It’s a space to fuel mindfulness. It’s a space to emulate vulnerability in the sharing of our stories because our stories are our greatest strengths and our strongest powers. Our superpowers.

“It’s not always easy doing the ‘work,’ especially as it pertains to things that we may not be mindful of. But, so long as we’re committed- we’ll grow there, in time.”
